The rehabilitation and re-signification project of the Aliaga Thermal Power Plant aims to recover this historic building by adapting it to a new use as a school for various artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, photography, and dance. The project proposes a student residence with rooms and housing units located on elevated floors, while shared and communal spaces are concentrated on the ground level to encourage social interaction.
El proyecto de rehabilitación y resignificación de la Central Térmica de Aliaga busca recuperar este edificio histórico adaptándolo a su nuevo uso como escuela de diversas disciplinas artísticas como son la pintura, escultura, fotografía y danza. El proyecto plantea una residencia de estudiantes con habitaciones y viviendas situadas en plantas elevadas, mientras que los espacios comunes se concentran en la planta baja para favorecer la vida colectiva.
The intervention combines heritage conservation with the creation of functional and sustainable spaces, promoting cultural activity within the rural community. Through a diagnostic and planning phase, an architectural strategy is developed that respects the plant’s industrial identity while organizing the complex through a set of defined design principles.
The proposal includes reinforcing deteriorated structural elements, upgrading building services, and reorganizing the spatial layout to ensure accessibility, safety, and energy efficiency. The complex will provide dance studios as well as art workshops, each designed according to the specific requirements of the different artistic disciplines.
La intervención combinará la conservación del patrimonio con la creación de espacios funcionales y sostenibles, promoviendo la actividad cultural en la comunidad rural. Mediante una fase de diagnóstico y planificación, se diseña un plan arquitectónico que respete su identidad industrial y que organiza el complejo mediante unas estrategias de proyecto definidas. Se plantea reforzar los elementos estructurales deteriorados, modernizar las instalaciones y la distribución de los espacios para garantizar accesibilidad, seguridad y eficiencia energética. El complejo dotará de salas de danza así como talleres de arte con sus respectivas necesidades según la rama artística.
An exhibition and performance space is also proposed, intended not only for temporary and permanent residents but also for the inhabitants of the village of Aliaga and its surrounding area. These spaces act as an interface between the school and the local community, allowing artistic production to become visible and accessible beyond the academic sphere.
The various spaces that make up the school coexist and are interconnected through the arrangement of different volumes that sculpt the interior void and allow visual relationships between the different levels. This spatial configuration reinforces the perception of the building as a continuous interior landscape, where movement, light, and visual connections foster interaction between disciplines and users.
The project seeks not only to rehabilitate an emblematic building, but also to transform it into a cultural landmark that fosters creativity and artistic learning within a natural and rural setting. By reactivating the former industrial structure, the intervention establishes a dialogue between memory, contemporary use, and the surrounding landscape, positioning the complex as a new cultural reference for the territory.
También se plantea un espacio expositivo y escénico destinado no solo a los residentes temporales y permanentes, sino también a los habitantes del pueblo de Aliaga y su entorno. Estos espacios funcionan como un punto de encuentro entre la escuela y la comunidad, permitiendo que los procesos y resultados artísticos se compartan y se integren en la vida cultural del lugar.
Los diferentes espacios que conforman la escuela conviven y se vinculan entre sí gracias a la disposición de distintos volúmenes que esculpen el vacío interior y permiten relaciones visuales entre los diferentes niveles. Esta organización espacial refuerza la lectura del edificio como un paisaje interior continuo, en el que la luz, el movimiento y las visuales cruzadas favorecen el intercambio entre disciplinas y usuarios.
El proyecto no solo busca rehabilitar un edificio emblemático, sino también convertirlo en un referente cultural que fomente la creatividad y el aprendizaje artístico en un entorno natural y rural. La reactivación de la antigua estructura industrial establece un diálogo entre memoria, nuevo uso y paisaje, consolidando el conjunto como un nuevo foco cultural para el territorio.
A landscaped courtyard between the residence and the former thermal power plant acts as a relational and environmental filter, mediating between built volumes and fostering collective life. Access walkways incorporate terrace gardens, extending green spaces vertically and integrating circulation with areas for rest, encounter, and outdoor use.
Un patio ajardinado entre la residencia y la antigua central térmica actúa como espacio de relación y filtro ambiental entre los volúmenes construidos. Los jardines en las terrazas de las pasarelas de acceso incorporan la vegetación al recorrido, integrando circulación, descanso y uso exterior en el conjunto.
